Vulnerability scanner
A vulnerability scanner is a cybersecurity tool that automatically scans computer systems to detect, assess, and prioritize security vulnerabilities that need to be addressed before they can be exploited.
Definition and Role of a Vulnerability Scanner
A vulnerability scanner is an automated cybersecurity tool designed to identify, analyze, and classify security vulnerabilities in an information system. It is an essential component of the vulnerability management strategies that companies implement to reduce their exposure to cyberthreats.
Specifically, the scanner scans digital assets—servers, applications, databases, network equipment, endpoints, and even cloud environments— for known vulnerabilities (CVE— Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) or misconfigurations that could be exploited by an attacker.
How does a vulnerability scanner work?
The process consists of three main steps:
-
Asset Discovery The scanner maps the infrastructure to identify exposed resources: IP addresses, open ports, software versions, certificates, etc. -
Vulnerability Analysis and Detection Using vulnerability databases (such as those from CERT-FR, CISA, or MITRE), the tool compares detected signatures with known vulnerabilities. It also assesses the level of risk associated with each vulnerability based on standards such as CVSS (Common Vulnerability Scoring System). -
Reporting and Recommendations Finally, the scanner generates a detailed report listing the identified vulnerabilities, their severity (low, medium, high, critical), and remediation recommendations to fix the vulnerabilities or mitigate the risks.
Why use a vulnerability scanner?
Regular use of a vulnerability scanner enables organizations to:
-
Anticipate attacks before they are exploited by malicious actors.
-
Maintain regulatory compliance, particularly with regard to the GDPR, the NIS2 Directive, and the ISO 27001 security standards.
-
Optimize patch management by prioritizing the most critical vulnerabilities.
-
Strengthen the resilience of the information system through a proactive and continuous cybersecurity approach.
According to ANSSI, the early detection of vulnerabilities is one of the fundamental practices of a mature security posture.
